TROOPS NAB TWO SUSPECTED CATTLE THIEVES IN BENUE STATE

In a continued effort to curb criminal activities and enhance security across Benue State, troops of the Joint Task Force (JTF), Operation WHIRL STROKE (OPWS), have arrested two suspected cattle thieves during a patrol in Guma Local Government Area.

The operation, which took place on Saturday, July 6, was launched as part of a reinforcement mission for the Nigeria Police, who had earlier encountered armed herders near Udei Village.

While en route, the troops intercepted two men Raymond Abina (32) and Sunday Faga (21) both residents of Ukohol Village, Guma LGA.

The suspects were apprehended on a motorcycle carrying a sack of freshly butchered cow meat. Upon interrogation, they claimed the meat had been purchased from a Fulani herder inside the forest. However, preliminary investigations revealed that the meat was linked to a stolen cow reported missing in Tse Pokiau Village, near Daudu.

According to the OPWS Commander, Major General Moses Gara, the suspects will be handed over to the appropriate authorities for prosecution once preliminary investigations are completed.

General Gara condemned the rising cases of cattle theft and jungle justice, labeling them as threats fueling insecurity in the state. He urged residents to reject criminality and cooperate with security agencies by reporting suspicious activity and avoiding self-help measures.

He also called on traditional rulers, youth leaders, and religious figures to foster peaceful coexistence and promote lawful conflict resolution across ethnic lines. Stressing that “peace is a shared responsibility,” the commander encouraged communities to activate early warning systems and collaborate with authorities for lasting peace.

General Gara reaffirmed the commitment of Operation WHIRL STROKE to neutralizing threats and maintaining law and order in its areas of responsibility. He also appealed to the media to support peacebuilding by promoting responsible reporting and public trust in legal institutions.
