Renowned journalist and author, Chuks Iloegbunam, has said that the detention of Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, remains a major obstacle to peace in Nigeria’s Southeast.

Speaking during an interview on the Edmund Obilo Show on Splash FM 105.5, Iloegbunam argued that the federal government’s continued hold on Kanu has fueled anger, unrest, and instability in the region. He stressed that the solution to the crisis was political rather than military.

“If you release Nnamdi Kanu today, I tell you, the chances of peace returning will be 90%,”

Iloegbunam insisted that dialogue and reconciliation would do far more to heal tensions than forceful crackdowns. He maintained that releasing Kanu would calm tensions and open the door for genuine dialogue between the government and aggrieved groups.

He added that the move would demonstrate the federal government’s willingness to prioritize peace and national unity over punitive measures.
