The Benue State House of Assembly has amended the law renaming the state-owned university in Makurdi. The institution, earlier changed from Benue State University to Rev. Fr. Moses Orshio Adasu University in December 2024, will now be known as Father Adasu University, Makurdi.
The change followed a debate on the report of the House Committee on Higher Education during Thursday’s plenary. Majority Leader Saater Tiseer (APC/Mbagwa) argued that the previous name was too long.
The Assembly also passed bills upgrading the Colleges of Education in Katsina-Ala and Oju into degree-awarding institutions.
Speaker Alfred Emberga directed the Clerk, Dr. Bem Mela, to read the bills for the third time, after which they were passed.
Governor Hyacinth Alia had earlier pushed for the university to bear Adasu’s name in honour of the late former governor who established the institution.
