In a move to address persistent public criticism and speculation surrounding her daughter Regina Daniels’ 2019 marriage to billionaire politician Ned Nwoko, veteran actress Rita Daniels has finally opened up. In a viral video circulating on social media, Rita revealed that she never wanted her then 18-year-old daughter to marry the older politician, but Regina insisted on the union.
The highly publicized age-gap marriage sparked a firestorm of controversy from the outset, with many Nigerians accusing Rita Daniels of arranging the marriage for financial gain. Now, speaking years later, Rita Daniels refutes these claims, explaining that the public’s perception of her role in the marriage is false.
“When Regina got married and the whole world blamed me, saying I forced her to marry a much older man or sold her to an elderly man, what they didn’t know is that even I didn’t know when they started their relationship,” Rita said in the video. She confessed that she was actually the last person to find out about the relationship between Regina and Ned Nwoko.
Rita Daniels recounted that upon discovering the relationship, she confronted her daughter. To her surprise and dismay, the usually compliant Regina responded with stubbornness and spoke harshly to her for the first time. This was a clear sign to Rita that her daughter was serious about her decision, and as a mother, she eventually chose to accept it. Despite her initial reservations, Rita Daniels said she chose to stand by her daughter and offer her the best advice and support she could.
Her revelation sheds new light on the often-criticized union and reframes the public’s understanding of her involvement, portraying her not as a greedy parent, but as a mother who ultimately yielded to her daughter’s insistent will.
