Usman Ododo, governor of Kogi, has commended President Bola Tinubu for appointing Waidi Shaibu, a native of the state, as the new chief of army staff (COAS).
Tinubu approved sweeping changes in the nation’s military leadership on Friday.
Shaibu, a major general, replaced Olufemi Oluyede, a lieutenant general, who was elevated to the chief of defence staff (CDS).
Sunday Kelvin Aneke, an air vice-marshal, became air chief, while Idi Abbas, a rear admiral, is the new naval chief.
In a statement issued on Friday in Lokoja, the capital of Kogi, by Kingsley Femi Fanwo, the state’s commissioner for information and communications, Ododo described Shaibu’s appointment as a demonstration of the president’s “commitment to fairness, equity, and recognition of merit in national service.”
Ododo said Shaibu’s elevation is a source of pride and inspiration to the people of Kogi, adding that his professionalism, discipline, and dedication to duty distinguish him as “a fine officer and true patriot”.
The governor expressed confidence that the new COAS would strengthen the Nigerian Army and sustain efforts to improve national security.
“Major-General Shaibu’s track record gives us great confidence that he will justify this trust and deliver effectively on his mandate,” Ododo said.
He congratulated the new chief of army staff and pledged the continued loyalty and support of Kogi people to the Tinubu administration.
