FACT CHECK : HAS INSECURITY ON MAKURDI –OTUKPO ROAD REDUCED IN 2026?

CLAIM

Recent claims suggest that insecurity on the Makurdi–Otukpo road has reduced in 2026 due to increased security presence,  patrols and rescue operations. Reports from government and some members of the public point to arrests and successful rescue efforts as proof that the road is now safer.

VERIFICATION

The Makurdi–Otukpo road as one of the busiest highways in Benue State , connecting travellers, recent incidents suggest that security concerns still exist. In April 2026, gunmen attacked a passenger bus along the Makurdi–Otukpo highway and abducted passengers, including persons reportedly travelling for the Joint Admission and Matriculation Board Examinations(JAMB). This indicates that criminal activities are still high and active on the route in 2026.

Reports further stated that security operatives later rescued the kidnapped passengers and arrested suspects. While this shows efforts by security agencies, it however suggests that abduction incidents are still occurring on the road.

For insecurity to be considered reduced, there should be significant decline in attacks,  kidnapping cases, and improved public confidence for day and night traveling. Recent available reports do not support this.

VERDICT

Misinformation

Although security agencies have responded through rescue operations and arrests, recent attacks and abductions on the Makurdi–Otukpo road show that insecurity has not reduced enough in 2026 to fully support the claim. Travellers still face notable risks on the route.
