At least 11 people are feared dead after a boat carrying mourners from a burial ceremony capsized on the River Benue in Makurdi Local Government Area of Benue State on Saturday evening.
According to local sources, the tragic incident occurred during a heavy downpour accompanied by strong winds, which reportedly caused the vessel to overturn. The boat was said to be transporting more than 40 passengers who were returning from a burial ceremony to an island community in the North Bank area of Makurdi.
Witnesses said panic erupted as the boat struggled against the harsh weather conditions before eventually capsizing, throwing passengers into the river. Rescue efforts were immediately launched by local residents and emergency responders to locate survivors and recover victims.
While several passengers were reportedly rescued, fears remain that at least 11 people may have lost their lives in the accident. Authorities are yet to release an official casualty figure as search and rescue operations continue.
The incident has thrown the affected communities into mourning, with families anxiously awaiting news about their loved ones.
