Former Deputy Governor of Benue State, Engr. Benson Abounu, has strongly condemned the latest killings in Otukpo, describing the incessant attacks and unprovoked killings of innocent people on their ancestral lands as a matter of grave concern.
Reacting to the reported multiple killings in Otukponobi in the early hours of today, Abounu described the incident as devastating and called for urgent, proactive security measures.
“The incessant Fulani militia attacks and unprovoked, wanton killings of our people on our lands have become matters of serious concern. The dastardly multiple killings in Otukponobi in the early hours of today are most devastating.”
The former Deputy Governor also criticised what he described as the usual reactionary deployment of security personnel after attacks have already occurred, stressing that such measures are no longer sufficient.
“The usual after-effect reactionary displays of security men are not quite helpful. The time has come to engage intelligence reports to forestall unnecessary murders. A stitch in time saves nine.”
Abounu called on relevant security agencies to strengthen intelligence gathering and act swiftly on credible information to prevent further loss of lives in Otukpo and other affected communities.
