The paramount ruler of the Tiv nation, Professor James Ayatse, has given traditional rulers in Konshisha and Gwer East local government areas of Benue State a two-day ultimatum to rid their domains of the militias and hired killers fueling the Ugambe–Mbaiase crisis.
In a statement by his Special Assistant on Media and ICT, Freddie Adamgbe, Ayatse gave the order at his palace in Gboko after meeting with traditional rulers and council chairmen from the affected areas. Community leaders at the meeting traced the conflict back to land disputes.
He warned village heads against harbouring the mercenaries responsible for the violence and killings, stressing that such practices prolong the crisis and worsen insecurity.
The monarch urged the communities to return to the values of peaceful coexistence upheld by their forefathers.
He further directed the two Mue Ter of Shangev Tiev and Masev to ensure the immediate expulsion of armed groups from the two communities.
He also appealed to the state government to expedite action on demarcating the boundary between Ugambe and Mbaiase to secure lasting peace.
Meanwhile, the local government chairmen and chiefs present at the meeting commended the Tor Tiv’s intervention and pledged to enforce his directive to end the protracted conflict.
