Sevilla striker Akor Adams — who traces his roots to Otukpa in Benue State — marked a dream first appearance for the Super Eagles by scoring in Nigeria’s 2–1 World Cup qualifying win over Lesotho in Polokwane on Friday. The result keeps Nigeria firmly in the mix as the team chases 2026 World Cup qualification.
Adams was introduced from the bench in the 62nd minute and finished clinically in the 80th to double Nigeria’s lead after the visitors had earlier taken the lead from the spot. Victor Osimhen played the key part in the move that led to Adams’ goal, setting up the debutant for the finish. Lesotho pulled one back late, but Nigeria held on for the vital away victory.
The goal is a major moment for the 25-year-old forward: Adams earned his first senior call-up earlier this month and has been in fine club form since moving to Sevilla. Local media and fans back home in Otukpa and Benue have already celebrated the moment as a source of pride for the community.
Adams’ debut goal gives coach and fans an extra attacking option as Nigeria prepares for the return qualifier at home against Benin. For Adams personally, scoring on a senior debut — and shortly after joining Sevilla — is a major confidence boost and raises his profile in the national setup.
