Nigeria’s Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, has officially disavowed a viral social media post that allegedly featured him mocking United States President Donald Trump. The controversial post related to Trump’s recent threats of military action in Nigeria over claims of Christian persecution.
Akpabio’s office described the statement as “completely fabricated, malicious, and reckless.”
In a formal response intended to clear his name, the Senate President’s media team asserted that the comments attributed to him were entirely false and not representative of his views or the official stance of his office. The office emphasized that Akpabio maintains a strong, respectful relationship with international partners, including the United States, and would not engage in such disrespectful commentary.
The false statement had circulated widely online, suggesting Akpabio made light of Trump’s remarks, which has put significant diplomatic pressure on the Tinubu administration. Akpabio is attempting to quickly quash the post to avoid any diplomatic fallout or the perception of internal Nigerian government discord on a sensitive international issue.
