BENUE @ 50: Alia Immortalises Murtala Muhammed, Renames BPPC After Dan Agbese, Grants Clemency to 14 Inmates

 

Governor of Benue State, Rev. Fr. Hyacinth Alia, has announced plans to immortalise the late Head of State, Gen. Murtala Muhammed, and other distinguished past leaders of the state as part of activities marking Benue’s 50th anniversary.

The governor made the declaration during a live broadcast to the people of the state on Tuesday from the Government House, Makurdi, in commemoration of the Golden Jubilee celebration.

Gen. Murtala Muhammed created Benue State on February 3, 1976, alongside other states during his tenure as Nigeria’s military Head of State.

Governor Alia said it was necessary to honour past heroes who played significant roles in the creation of the state and in laying foundations for future generations.

He noted that immortalising Gen. Muhammed was particularly important, given his historic role in creating Benue State.

In a related development, the governor announced the renaming of the Benue Printing and Publishing Corporation (BPPC) after late veteran journalist, Chief Dan Agbese. The corporation will now be known as the Dan Agbese Printing and Publishing Corporation.

Alia further disclosed that other eminent Benue indigenes, both late and living, would have legacy establishments named after them. Those listed include the late Wantaregh Paul Unongo, Elder Isaac Shaahu, Senator Suemo Chia, Gen. Atom Kpera, the late Tashaku Oradi, among others.

As part of the jubilee celebrations, the governor also exercised his prerogative of mercy, granting clemency to 14 inmates serving various jail terms across correctional facilities in the state. One inmate, Terhumba Aondona, had his sentence reduced from 10 years to four years.

The beneficiaries of the clemency include Akaajime Imoter, Kongusu Terzugwe, Terngu Orshi, Ornaa Achagh, Zwa Achir, Terkimbi Amadu, Iorpenda Christian, Aondowaae Terlumun, Oriba John, Sughnen Terfa James, Akaahar Isaac, Ordam Thankgod, Gwayem Agba James and Iorfa Terkimbi.

The announcement formed part of activities celebrating five decades of Benue’s creation, with the governor reaffirming his administration’s commitment to preserving the state’s history and strengthening its legacy for future generations.
