LAGOS, Nigeria, July 27 (African News Digest) – Arise Television Morning Show anchor, Rufai Oseni, has criticised the recent interview appearance of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) presidential candidate, Peter Obi, saying the former Anambra State governor failed to provide sufficient details on how he intends to address Nigeria’s challenges.
Oseni made the remarks on Monday while reacting to Obi’s interview on Channels Television’s Sunday Politics programme.
According to the broadcaster, presidential candidates should move beyond making broad promises and explain the specific ideas, strategies and methodologies they intend to use to solve the country’s problems.
“And that’s what I did not see yesterday. I didn’t see the how. We can’t run a country on vibes,” Oseni said.
He argued that with the 2027 general elections approaching, Nigerians should be presented with detailed manifestos and clear policy frameworks from presidential candidates.
“By now, if elections are in January, we are now in August, we have not seen manifesto. Six months to go,” he said.
Oseni urged candidates to stop simply telling Nigerians what they intend to do and instead explain how they plan to achieve their objectives.
“In fact, I think all candidates should stop telling us I will do this. They should start telling us how. We should see an idea. It’s the idea that we want to debate, the workability of the idea, and that I didn’t see. I didn’t see a lot of that,” he added.
The broadcaster also criticised the frequent promise by political candidates to tackle insecurity without providing a clear strategy for achieving the objective.
“We will fix insecurity. How?” Oseni asked, stressing that candidates do not need to disclose sensitive operational details but should explain their broader methodology.
“Nobody say you should share your operational details. What we are saying is overarching details, methodology, how you are going to do it. That’s just it,” he said.
Oseni also called for more technical and methodological explanations from presidential candidates on critical sectors, particularly electricity.
He questioned how candidates would increase power generation and address Nigeria’s transmission challenges, noting that the country has significant installed generation capacity but continues to face limitations in transmitting electricity to consumers.
“Power sector, what would you do as regards them about creating thousands of megawatts? Major problem in the power sector today is transmission,” he said.
Oseni further asked whether future administrations would invest in transmission infrastructure and how such investments would be financed.
He said these were the kinds of detailed policy proposals Nigerians should expect from presidential candidates as the 2027 elections approach.
